Creator Of Kimkins Is Busted

Jennifer on October 3rd, 2007 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

Kimkins creator has been busted!  I for one could not be happier.  This woman should have been stopped long ago!

Watch the exclusive video of Kimmer being questioned about her identity.  There will be more tomorrow.

Interesting how “Kimmer’s” post-Kimkins picture in the red dress was taken down from the Kimkins.com website last night.  The most appalling thing to me that I recently found out is that Kimmer never even lost the weight she claimed to have lost, nor did she even follow this program!  Unbelievable.

Spotting A Fad Diet

Jennifer on September 26th, 2007 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

With the recent Kimkins controversy, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about fad diets.  In my opinion, fad diets are nothing but a way to prey on desperate folks to take their hard-earned money.  Fad diets might work at first, but once the diet is stopped, the weight usually comes back pretty quickly.  Oftentimes, when weight is lost quickly, it’s not fat but water and muscle, and the weight that is gained back is usually fat.

So how do you spot a fad diet?  There’s really no one way to spot a fad, but there are a couple of things to watch out for when looking at diet plans:

  • Promises of a quick fix/fast weight loss instead of lifestyle change
  • Elimination of one of the five food groups
  • Requires severe calorie restriction
  • Statements and recommendations that don’t jive with scientific studies
  • Claims or testimonials that are too good to be true (for example:  “I lost 30 lbs. in 2 weeks!”)

I’m sure I’ve missed something that should be on the above list.   The best thing to keep in mind about healthy and long-term weight loss is that it’s all about changing one’s lifestyle, eating healthy and being active.  There are no “quick fixes” or “miracles” when it comes to permanent weight loss.

The Lowdown On Kimkin’s

Jennifer on September 22nd, 2007 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

I had posted earlier this month my thoughts on the Kimkin’s Diet.  I found something interesting over at 3 Fat Chicks on a Diet that I feel the need to share.  It gives the real lowdown on everything Kimkin’s.  If you’re thinking about investing in (or even reading at the Low Carb Friends forum in order to get the basics of the diet so you can do it), please check out Kimkins: Anatomy of a Diet Scam from the weight loss experts at 3FatChicks.com.

My Thoughts On The Kimkins Diet

Jennifer on September 5th, 2007 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

A couple of months ago, I heard about the Kimkins Diet.  I had never heard of it before, but a friend said she was trying it and it was just “low carb.”  I didn’t think much of it - I mean Atkins and South Beach are low carb, have been around forever, and people have had pretty good success with them (although I think Atkins calls for too few carbs at first).  So I thought Kimkins was just another variation of a low carb diet.  Nothing wrong with that, right?  Wrong!

I started looking around the Low Carb Friends Forum because there is a folder there dedicated just to Kimkins dieters.  I was not prepared for what I saw.  This “diet” calls for eating anywhere around 500 to 800 calories a day, sometimes going as low as 300 a day.  Dieters eat mostly meats and eggs.  It’s their choice if they want to eat veggies, but their carbs cannot be over 20 grams per day.  Fruits, milk, and nuts are not allowed.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, Kimmer (the creator of Kimkins) promotes using laxatives on a daily basis.  I mean think about it - if all someone is eating is pretty much meat and eggs, where are they getting their fiber?  ”Things” are going to stop moving and constipation will occur.  So Kimkins calls for the use of laxatives to keep things moving along.  (Overuse would probably be a better term to describe it) I think the saddest thing for me was reading posts at the Low Carb Friends Forum.  These folks were having bad side effects from this diet (dizziness, fatigue, nausea, hair loss), yet because they were losing weight and being told they were in ketosis (the ultimate goal of a Kimkins dieter), they kept right on going with it.  One woman I read about was afraid to eat lettuce!  I had to wonder if some of these women were starting to develop an eating disorder.  It angers me to think that someone such as Kimmer preys on people’s desperation to lose weight and will literally hurt someone to make a buck.

The good news is there are professionals speaking out against Kimkins.  I happened upon an article last night written by Laura Dolson at About.com.  She is the Guide of the Low Carb Diets section at About.com and she knows her stuff.  To get the low down on Kimkins, check out Laura’s article
