Plan Of Action For Weight Loss

Jennifer on April 17th, 2006 | File Under Weight Loss Tips -

I thought while I was waiting for my turn on the Bowflex this morning, I would write about something that I don’t hear many people talking about.

When it comes to losing weight, we have to have a plan of action.  It can be a small plan, but we have to plan, nonetheless.  I mean if we were taking a trip somewhere, would we go without a plan for where we will stay, how we will get there, etc.?  No.  The same thing with weight loss - it’s a journey, so we need a plan.

How will you meet your weight loss goals?  Will you just fly by the seat of your pants or will you have some sort of roadmap to success?  I prefer to have a roadmap outlining exactly how and what I am going to do to reach my goal.  Creating this weight loss roadmap is not hard:  just sit down, write down what your goal is (I would suggest starting out with small, attainable goals), and write down how you intend to do it - by cutting refined sugar from your diet?  Starting an exercise program?  Drinking more water?  What exactly are you going to do?  Once you have this written down, it’s easier to stick with it.  Don’t forget that “slow and steady wins the race.”  This isn’t about losing huge amounts of weight in the smallest amount of time.  It’s about making and reaching your goals and feeling successful when you do it!  Once you meet one goal, go right ahead and set another, then another.

Do you have a weight loss success story?  If so, please feel free to post about it or send me an email at weightlo@weightlossinfocenter.com and I will be happy to post it for you.  I would love to hear about it and I’m sure my readers would too.

Have a great and healthy day!

Remaining Fat Is Healthier Than Weight Loss?

Jennifer on April 13th, 2006 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

What a crazy week!  I haven’t had time to do much this week, but the Bowflex did get put together last weekend and so my workout days this week are Tuesday, Thursday (today), and Friday.  I worked out Tuesday and it felt wonderful!  I had forgotten what resistance/weight training felt like!  I can’t wait to get in there and workout today.  I would rather workout in the morning after getting up since we burn more fat during that time - 12% more fat, actually - but I will take what I can get right now.  Next week, I am changing my workout days to MWF and aiming for morning instead of evening.

Now on to real weight loss news…

I found a curious story about how one man thinks remaining fat is healthier than weight loss?  While the author does have some good (and valid) points, I think he’s just making excuses for himself.  I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, but, really, remaining overweight is NOT healthier than losing weight.  While he does include studies that support his “theory” (and that’s all that it is), he didn’t bother to post the numerous studies that show how dangerous and damaging being overweight really is.  Diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, circulation problems, breathing problems, and numerous other illnesses and diseases are not healthier than losing weight.  Sorry.

Now, I do agree with him that yo-yo dieting is dangerous…absolutely!  However, lifestyle changes are NOT dangerous.  Changing just one thing at a time in order to gain better health AND lose weight is NOT dangerous.  Performing just 30 minutes of physical activity per day (walking, jogging, cleaning house, whatever) is NOT dangerous and will lead to weight loss if no medical conditions are present (for example, a thyroid problem).

I hope no one takes this person’s post seriously because it’s just a “theory” and a dangerous one at that.

Exercise And Empowerment

Jennifer on April 6th, 2006 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

So yesterday I actually exercised for the first time in months.  Now, I decided not to do the Beachbody because it was the middle of the week.  Strange, I know, but when I start any exercise program, I like to do it on a Monday.  It’s easier for me to keep track.  So instead of Beachbody, I walked on the treadmill.  I was aiming for 1 mile in 15 minutes, but it took me 17:02 minutes.  Not too shabby for someone that has been pretty much inactive for the past few months.  I did get winded, which is good.  That let’s me know I am doing some work.  I had totally forgotten how empowered I feel when I exercise!  How much I love to get my heart pumping and to sweat!  Woooo-hoooo!  I used to weight train and nothing made me feel more empowered than lifting those weights.  I can’t wait to get back into that again.  The Bowflex is still sitting here waiting for my husband to put it together, but that’s okay, I can wait.

Now on to real weight loss news…

There’s a new weight loss drug out on the market called Zetacap.  The cheapest I found it was on eBay! for $67.  I have seen it a lot more expensive than that, though.  Supposedly it’s the “gastric bypass in a bottle.”  So I did a little digging and have read from a lot of different (and credible) sources that Zetacap is nothing more than fiber in pill form.  (By the way, I am starting to feel like that lady from the ’90s…Susan Powter.  She always used to say….”Stop the Insanity!”  That is what I feel like screaming right now!).  Why do people fall for this?  Yes, I have bought diet pills in the past.  Who hasn’t when they’ve been at their most desperate?  But that is why I am so against them!  They are nothing more than glorified caffeine, usually, and now they’re glorified fiber.  UGH!  Come on, people, stop buying this stuff!  I know what it feels like to be desperate, so take my advice…eat right, drink lots of water, and exercise at least 1/2 an hour a day.  You will see results!  Yes, you must be patient, but would you rather be patient and have money in your pocket or be not patient and have your pockets empty from spending all your hard earned money on junk?  It seems like more and more people are looking for an easy way to lose weight and to be healthy, but diet pills are NOT going to do that for you!  Only you can do that and yes, it’s work (just what you wanted to hear, right?).  But I have found that the best things in life aren’t always easy.

Gained Weight

Jennifer on April 4th, 2006 | File Under Personal Weight Loss Talk -

Well, well, well…much to my surprise, today I found that I have packed on some pounds again.  It shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise.  I gained 12 pounds in the month following my dead’s death in November of ‘05.  I wasn’t eating and just putting away the Mt. Dew.  Then I finally came to my senses, shed the 12 pounds and thought everything was okay.  Well, I guess grief will do it to you.  My brother passed away in February of ‘06, and although I knew I was grieving and that I have been stressed out, I didn’t think I was gaining weight.  You’re probably wondering how did I not know?  Well….I am not a slave to the scale anymore, so I never weigh myself.  I run around in lounge pants.  I hardly ever have occasion to wear anything besides lounge pants…until today.

My husband took the day off and wanted me to go out to dinner.  So I go to get ready, planning on sliding into my favorite pair of Levi’s…but…oops!  I didn’t slide ride in…it was more like trying to hoist them over my hips left me winded! WHAT?  I can barely get them buttoned!  It really shouldn’t have been that big of a shock because I haven’t done much since my brother died.  No physical activity, really.  And once again, I am up to 2-4 (sometimes 5) Mt. Dews a day.  *Sigh*

So I am going to once again start the best program I have found yet:  Slim in 6 by the folks at Beachbody.com  I used it to shed the last 20 pounds I was carrying around in 2004, so I am sure it will work again.  Plus, I really like doing it as it’s very upbeat and I get such quick results!  The last time I did it, I lost 2 inches off my waist in 3 days.  I chalk it up to drinking 8 glasses of water a day and working out in the morning before breakfast (you lose weight quicker by exercising in the morning).

Bright and early tomorrow morning, I will be up and working on getting rid of this weight.  I’m definitely looking forward to it!
