Here Comes Another New Weight Loss Miracle…

Jennifer on March 31st, 2006 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

And people are actually buying into it.  Evidently there is some new “cleanse” out on the market that touts that people can lose tremendous amounts of weight doing a 9-day or 30-day cleanse.  I have seen some people say that they have lost 20 pounds in the first 30 days ~ hogwash!  Oh, I might just buy into the fact that after they cleansed their bodies, they did lose weight.  In fact, I wholeheartedly agree that we should cleanse our bodies of toxins.  However, most everyone knows that the key to long lasting weight loss is to do so slowly AND that if you lose considerable amounts of weight every week, you are more than likely losing water, meaning once you go off the cleanse and start eating the exact same way you did before, the weight most often comes right back.  There is a heafty price tag on this new weight loss cleanse and I feel bad that people are buying it.  I really do.  I get tired of seeing people spend their hard earned money on these “liquid diets” and are so disappointed when it doesn’t work…or worse yet, it does work for a period of time and then the weight comes back.  By the way, if you’re interested, the new “miracle” is called Isagenix.  You can read all about it yourself and come to your own conclusions, but here is the disclaimer from their site, which tells the whole story:  “As with any health or fitness program, a sensible eating plan and regular exercise are required in order to achieve long-term weight loss results.”

Oh, really now?  Who would have ever guessed?  Sigh…

I wish more people would take their hard-earned money and put it into things that will really help them lose weight and keep it off, like weight loss books and/or magazines, exercise equipment or fitness DVDs; I would rather even see people put their money into Weight Watchers because at least WW aids in trying to teach people how to eat healthy.

Ear Stapling For Weight Loss?

Jennifer on March 26th, 2006 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

I found an article on my home page under the Current Weight Loss News called Ear Stapling? Weight Loss Fads Turn Bad

The procedure costs $55 per stapling and you have to have it done every 3 months. Supposedly this releases endorphins, which in turn keeps you happy and stress free so that you don’t feel like you have to eat. Okayyyy. Well, for everyone who has it done, I sincerely hope it works for you.

In the meantime, while the stapling of the ear may decrease your appetite, it doesn’t teach you what you really need to know in order lose weight. What you really need to lose weight is to change your lifestyle. It’s that simple. Change your eating habits and get more exercise and save yourself the $55.

Cheating?

Jennifer on March 25th, 2006 | File Under Questionable Weight Loss Strategies -

I was reading a post on a message board the other day from someone who ate after 6:00 p.m. and was feeling down because she had “cheated.” If you are on a diet plan in which you are hungry, you eat, and then you feel like a failure because you “cheated,” something is wrong.

Losing weight does not have to be about deprivation and/or starvation! I personally don’t like to feel hungry and so if I am hungry, I eat. If it’s after 6:00, so what? If you are feeling the pangs of hunger, your body is trying to tell you something - don’t ignore it!

I see so many people who are unsuccessful with diet after diet after diet and yet continue to torture themselves by trying to stick with the same unsuccessful weight loss program.

Losing weight is simple: burn more calories than you take in. It sounds easy, right? Well, it is! Losing weight requires both a healthy diet AND exercise. If you are eating healthy and exercising, the weight will come off - be patient. When I say “healthy diet,” it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to subscribe to one of the many weight loss programs out there. You can simply put into action eating better and healthier foods. For example, instead of eating chips, try snacking on some veggies and low-fat dip; instead of drinking soda, try some iced tea sweetened with Stevia. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week. It’s really that easy.

I wish more people would understand that you don’t have to torture yourself to lose weight.

The Basics Of Weight Loss

Jennifer on March 7th, 2006 | File Under Weight Loss Tips -

I found an article from a couple of days ago that I just had to comment on. The article can be found here: Get a Slimmer Body - Weight Loss Program Advice

This article represents the basics of weight loss and here is the gist of the article and my advice:

1. Educate yourself about nutrition and fitness. Find out what’s healthy and unhealthy, learn how to read nutrition labels, find out what your BMI and your ideal weight is, and then go from there. Look at your daily habits to see what you may be doing wrong if you’re unsuccessful at losing weight.

2. Maintain discipline and patience. How do you maintain discipline and patience when you aren’t seeing results? Pretty tough, I know. But don’t give up. Make small attainable goals, one at a time, and once you reach that goal, set another. Don’t set yourself up for failure by wanting to lose 15 lbs. in a month. It’s not feasible (unless you’re starving yourself) and it’s dangerous.

3. Don’t deprive your body of food and especially water. Drink at least 8 glass of water a day. It will work wonders for flushing out fat AND keeping you hydrated. Don’t deprive yourself of food unless you want your body to go into “starvation” mode and actually hang on to fat instead of getting rid of it.

4. Don’t put yourself down. So you’re unhappy with the way you look? Only YOU can change that by eating healthy and getting in some type of physical activity at least 5 days per week. Indulge in some cheap exercise equipment and/or videos. Exercise will make you feel better and look better. If you splurge one day and eat some Cheetos, don’t make the mistake of thinking you “blew it.” Tomorrow is a new day, so get back on track the next day.

5. Talk, talk, and talk some more. Join a local gym or, again, exercise at home. Find a weight loss buddy. Talk to family or friends who have successfully lost weight to get some pointers. Join online support groups and message boards.

Most of all, be kind to yourself and your body.
